CASNI comment: The back door has been opened in a move to get rid of a leading figure in the child sex abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. The paedophile priest protector, Cardinal Sean Brady, will be moved on soon in a well orchestrated public relations stunt by Pope Benedict. The BBC exposed Brady’s connections to leading figures in the abuse scandal such as Father Brendan Smyth and the Norbertine order – who housed, financed and protected Smyth while he raped thousands of children across Ireland in parishes, hospitals, schools, and children’s homes.

On May 2, 2012 Cardinal Brady issued a statement to the press in response to the BBC exposure of the Roman Catholic Chruch cover-up of the Brendan Smyth affair etc. “On Tuesday 1 May 2012, the BBC ‘This World’ series broadcast a programme entitled ‘The Shame of the Catholic Church’ on the BBC Northern Ireland network. In the course of the programme a number of claims were made which overstate and seriously misrepresent my role in a Church Inquiry in 1975 into allegations against the Norbertine priest Fr Brendan Smyth. Read more…

Head Prelate Florence was a high ranking member of the Roman Catholic Church, and head of the De la Salle Christian Brothers in Rubane House, Kircubbin. Here he sexually abused boys all day long 24/7. He ran a pedophile ring with Father Brendan Smyth – who was also a close friend of Fr. Curran as the doucudrama The resurrection of Fr Brendan Smyth exposed – and also of paedophile Father Sean Fortune. This unholy roman gang may well have had their own child sex ring.

Historical abuse inquiry: 101 apply to take part (BBC news story)

The inquiry will examine allegations of abuse going back to 1922. A total of 101 people have applied to take part in the inquiry into abuse in care institutions in Northern Ireland between 1922 and 1995. The organisations that ran the institutions include Catholic religious orders, state and voluntary groups. Most applicants, 72%, want to meet with both the acknowledgment forum and the statutory inquiry.

Inquiry chairman, Sir Anthony Hart, said: “We are encouraged with the initial response to a low key launch.”

The acknowledgement forum will be a confidential one and will allow victims and survivors to tell their childhood experiences of living in institutions to members of the panel. The inquiry follows the damning Ryan Report in the Irish Republic that uncovered decades of endemic abuse in some religious institutions.

CASNI comment: Just over one hundred people have applied to take part in the child abuse inquiry in Northern Ireland. Not many to date! The poor advertising of the inquiry by the Stormont government is soley to blame. A few adverts in a couple of papers is not good enough. It is obvious that they have had an agenda from the start to thwart the victims getting justice and compensation. Most of these victims were tortured and sexually abused by the paedophile Church of Rome in the institutions owned and run by them for the old Stormont regime.

If you were in a children’s home and would like to make a statement to the inquiry you can telephone 0800 086 4935. Callers from outside the UK add the 0044 prefix.

Teacher accused of “systematic” abuse of young girls in her classroom from 1973 to 1975

By CATHY HAYES, IrishCentral Staff Writer

Published Thursday, November 15, 2012, 7:41 AM

A Catholic nun has been charged with the “systematic” abuse of seven schoolgirls in the 1970s. Sister Mary Teresa Grogan has denied the 63 counts of indecent assault put to her.

It is alleged that these crimes took place while she was teaching in a primary school (middle school) in the midlands of Ireland from 1973 to 1977. All of her victims were the same age, in third class, approximately nine-years-old.

One complainant told the court that the nun would call her to her desk and put her hand inside her underwear.

The lawyer for the prosecution, Aileen Donnelly SC, said that during the trial the other complainants would be giving evidence to the court of “highly similar” but not identical assaults, the Irish Times reports. Read more…

Jennifer McCann MLA and Jonathan Bell MLA, Junior Ministers in OFMDFM, today announced that the Acknowledgement Forum of the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry will begin its work on 1 October 2012.

Victims of childhood abuse in Northern Ireland, now must register to take part and have their childhood abuse experiences heard by the inquiry. The registration scheme will allow victims and survivors of historical institutional abuse the opportunity to register that they wish to come forward to have their experiences heard by the Acknowledgement Forum and/or Inquiry.

Junior Minister Bell said “Having spoken with many of those who suffered from their experiences in our Institutions I am acutely aware of the pain and suffering that has dominated many of their lives. The Acknowledgment Forum will provide an opportunity for victims and survivors to receive acknowledgement of their experience, and I hope will bring some comfort to them. I would encourage all those who were cared for in our institutions and feel they have a story to tell, to come forward to the Acknowledgement Forum.”

(Community Voice.ie) An 82-year-old Catholic priest living in Castleknock has been jailed for a year for indecently assaulting an 11 year old boy in the 1970s.

Fr. Patrick Hughes (82) with an address in Park Drive Court was a curate in the Navan Road at the time of some of the offences. A chapter in the recent horrific Murphy report on child sex abuse in the Dublin diocese deals with Hughes who is referred to in the report under the nom-de-plume of Fr. Ioannes.

Despite a garda investigation into the allegations against Hughes, he was shielded by the church authorities.

At a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court hearing, Hughes pleaded guilty to the offences and apologised to his victim.

The court heard that the Catholic Church authorities gave gardaí ‘the run around’ when they were investigating the whereabouts of Fr Hughes.

Following widespread publicity about the priest, he left the country in 2002 and was located by gardaí in the UK in 2007.

Mr. Remy Farrell, counsel for Fr. Hughes, said the church had been ‘reluctant to deal with the matter in a candid fashion’ but when Fr Hughes was approached by gardaí in the UK he took a different view.

He indecently assaulted an altar boy in the 1970s and 80s at a parochial house and during trips to the beach. He also intercepted him on journeys to school and abused him in his car. The victim told gardaí he had changed his bus stop and his journey times but the priest still managed to find him.

The court heard that the priest would ring the boy’s mother and ask if he could come to his house to do odd jobs. He would also take him on trips to the beach.

In statements to gardaí Fr Hughes said he was not a paedophile. He ‘was only attracted to altar boys,’ he said. He said he could not explain it and did not think any psychiatrist could explain it either. He had received counselling in the US and said he regretted what had happened and was sorry.

The court heard that the victim chose not to attend the hearing and had declined to make a victim impact statement. He made the complaint in 2003 after his mother became concerned after reading newspaper articles about the priest.

Judge Katherine Delahunt congratulated gardaí involved in the case and said they went almost beyond the call of duty to investigate the case. “This case took a long time to come before the court because it was delayed by persons who were shielding you,” she told the defendant’.

She said it was a gross abuse of trust and jailed him for one year.
